What I mean by that is when and where my baby gets hungry. 11 and 15 years ago when I nursed my boys I was very timid and had little support breastfeeding. This lead to early weaning(imposed by me) coupled with the introduction of bottles and artifical baby milk. I am so thankful for the knowledge, courage and understanding I have learned over the past few years that have enable me the strength and support to allow my baby to eat when and where she wants which in turn has play a vital role in being able to breastfeed to meet her needs! If YouTube had been around when I was nursing 11 and 15 years ago how different things would have been. We do the best we can with the knowledge and understanding we have. I am good with that and thankful for what nourishment I was able to provide them. But I am SO greatful for where I have evolved to today because it is just what my daughter needs! Breastfeeding is not always easy, it takes a lot of time. And to feel fear or inhibited by not being able to breastfeeding when and where your baby needs it makes it nearly impossible to breastfeed, yet alone allow extended breastfeeding if that is what your little one needs. Feeding when and where my daughter needs has lifted the unknown restrictions I had years ago that lead to early weaning imposed by me. You can do it. This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Breastfeeding her son on the TEDx stage is just the beginning. Mother and researcher Dr. Jenn Anderson is on a mission to transform entire cities across the U.S. into breastfeeding-friendly communities. She shares her own emotional breastfeeding journey, which has given her a passion to see that all breastfeeding mothers are supported when breastfeeding in public and are able to continue breastfeeding if they return to work. Dr. Jenn Anderson is an Assistant Professor in the Communication Studies & Theatre Department at South Dakota State University. Dr. Anderson and Dr. Rebecca Keuhl serve as Co-Principal Investigators for the "Brookings Supports Breastfeeding" project supported by a Community Innovation grant from the Bush Foundation. Dr. Anderson teaches and conducts research in the area of Health Communication, which is the study of the interaction between human communication and health outcomes. Dr. Anderson’s other current community-based health communication projects include expanding Brookings Health System’s prenatal education to the university campus and evaluating the Boys & Girls Club’s “Clubs Against Tobacco” Program. Her research has appeared in academic journals such as Health Communication, Journal of Health Communication, International Journal of Communication and Health, Journal of Applied Communication Research, Qualitative Health Research, and Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking. In addition, Dr. Anderson teaches courses in Health Communication and recently developed an interdisciplinary Health Communication minor at SDSU. Dr. Anderson gave birth to her first child, Winter James Anderson, on February 17, 2014 (8 weeks before his due date) via c-section, due to complications from eclampsia. Winter spent 31 days in the NICU, but he left the hospital exclusively breastfeeding and continues to do so at 8 months old. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. How to Get a Good Breastfeeding Latch | Parents

Watch as Parents Magazine shows how to get a good latch while breastfeeding! Breastfeeding positions are much easier when your baby has a good latch. Nursing doesn't always come easy to every infant and mom, but your baby is more likely to latch well when she's alert and hungry. To help her latch comfortably, your nipple needs to to back far in her mouth. Shape your breast so that your areola becomes an oval, then stroke your baby's bottom lip with your nipple. As she opens her mouth wide enough, guide her onto your breast. Her bottom lip will cover most of the lower half of your areola, while the top will rest just a bit above your nipple. Make sure her chin is pressed into your breast with her nose free to breathe. As her hands and body relax, you can tell she has a good breastfeeding latch. If you fee pain, your baby needs to use her jaw and tongue more to get the milk out. Re-position her by placing a finger on the side of her mouth, between her gums. This will break the seal, letting her try again.
